Description
The Ship Security Officer (SSO) certification in Brazil is covered by the CPPM (Curso para Profissionais de Proteção Marítima) course. The CPPM certifies participants for the CSO and the SSO (Ship Security Officer) duties. In order to obtain these certificates the participant must convert his certificate (issued by SHELTER and approved by the Port Authority) to either SSO or CSO
The Ship Security Officer (SSO) training course focuses on providing candidates an understanding of the role, duties and responsibilities of the Ship Security Officer (SSO) onboard the vessel. Further, it defines how they liaison with the port facility security officers and flag-state officials to ensure that appropriate protective security measures are implemented and maintained.
Upon completion, the candidate will be able to:
- Document and assess the existing security threats and risks, where they are and how they impact the vessel, especially as they relate to passage planning, the Ship Security Assessment (SSA).
- Develop, implement, maintain and update the Ship Security Plan (SSP).
- Ensure that security equipment/systems are properly operated, maintained and tested.
- Organize and manage emergency preparedness, training, drills and exercises on board.
- Undertake regular inspections to ensure that security measures are implemented correctly and that standards are maintained by watch keeping officers and crew alike.
This training corresponds to the IMO Model Course: Ship Security Officer – IMO Model Course 3.19.
NOTE: The course lectures, handouts and workbook are all in Portuguese. The training provided is in accordance with international standards as required by the IMO in the STCW convention; however it is tailored to the requirements set out by the Brazilian Maritime Authority.
