Description
The VTS On-the-Job Training (V-103/3) is intended to provide practical experience to the VTS operator or supervisor, after the successful completion of their courses. This practical experience is required for the student to become an efficient and competent operator or VTS Supervisor, authorized to perform operational functions of the service run by the VTS authority.
This course is held for to qualify operators and supervisors in a particular port, hence, it must be held at the specific port or control centre which the VTS operations will occur. This training includes an intensive program with visits to the allied port services.
At the end of the course the port VTS Controller shall approve the registration book of the eligible student.
Currently, SHELTER is the only company accredited by both the Brazilian Maritime Authority and IALA to minister VTS courses in Brazil.
Target Audience
Officers that want to work port side with the management of vessel traffic and control. Non-seafarers will be required to take a course with general nautical notions and GMDSS before enrolling.
Objective
At the end of the course the student should have acquired knowledge of the VTS facilities, allied services and the specific regulations for navigation in the port they will be working at.

Documents Required
• Certificate of completion of the VTS operator or supervisor course;
• Certificate of good standard of physical and mental health (26 NORMAN/DHN, Annex E);
• Certificate of fitness to perform the function (NORMAN 26/DHN, Annex E).
Course Content
This course is performed on the port which the VTS Operator or Supervisor will be working. If the student has not performed the On the Job Training as part of their operator training, they will be required to complete this training prior to working in the post with VTS. The On the Job training is linked to the port on which the VTS operation will take place, hence, in order to perform the job of a VTS Supervisor in another port, a new On the Job Training will be required.

Certificate
At the end of the course the student will receive the approved certificate awarded by SHELTER and endorsed by the Brazilian Maritime Authority with lifetime international validity while the VTS operator function is exercised, or five years in the event of inactivity.
