Description
The Roustabout Training Course is a basic course for anyone who wants to work in oil rigs. The Roustabout (or Roughneck) is part of the platform’s Maritime Crew and is in charge of assisting with cargo handling operations as well as assisting the specialists in maintenance and repair activities when required.
In short, the Roustabout is a sort of “jack of all trades” for minor jobs on board. The training course was developed to allowed inexperienced workers to learn the skills required to perform the task with safety and quality. The training provides students the knowledge of the technical standards and safety policies, as well as the health, security and environmental requirements.
NOTE: The course lectures, handouts and workbook are all in Portuguese. The training provided is in accordance with international standards as required by the IMO in the STCW convention; however it is tailored to the requirements set out by the Brazilian Maritime Authority.
Target Audience
In Brazil, the Roustabout training course is not compulsory. Inexperienced candidates seeking work on board oil rigs can increase their chances by successfully attaining this qualification. The Roustabout training alone does not qualify someone to work on board platforms. The Basic Safety Training (BST) is still required before boarding and the Helicopter Underwater Escape Training (HUET) might also be required.
Objective
At the end of the course students will be able perform the tasks of a Roustabout as well as having obtained knowledge related to the operational risks, emergency procedures, cargo handling, signs and work safety practices as well as valuable information regarding life on board and teamwork.
